One Thousand Hail Marys

Twenty Rosaries in Adoration – meditating with Mary the mysteries of redemption like the apostles in the cenacle

Praying one thousand Hail Marys, twenty Rosaries, usually in Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament in the parish church, at the wayside shrine or in the Shrine has developed into a very meaningful tradition by the Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign of the Pilgrim MTA in Argentina (and further afield). It is the source of abundant blessings since it promotes unity among the different parroquial groups.

While praying the rosary with Mary in adoration, we want to meditate on the lives of Jesus and Mary to learn how to live like them the mysteries of joy, sorrow, and glory in our own lives.

Like the apostles in the cenacle, united with Mary, and meditating in adoration on the mysteries of redemption, we ask the Holy Spirit for a new Pentecost in the new evangelization of the world.

A Bit of History: "To Ask the Virgin for a Grace…"

In Europe, according to an ancient tradition, when one wanted to ask the Virgin for a special grace, it was customary to offer her one thousand Hail Marys on a particular Marian feastday or on the eve of a feastday.

Providentially, on the 7th of November of 1983, when the Rosary Campaign of the Pilgrim MTA began its worldwide expansion and taking into consideration this ancient tradition, for the first time the one thousand Hail Marys were prayed in adoration at the Shrine in Schoenstatt: 20 rosaries prayed before the Blessed Sacrament and the Pilgrim Image of Our Lady of Schoenstatt while meditating on the mysteries of the lives of Jesus and Mary and trying to apply them to our daily life.

The fruitfulness and the graces received were so great that since then the "one thousand Hail Marys in Adoration" quickly spread to the different areas where the pilgrim images of the Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign traveled.

The One Thousand Hail Marys: A Response to the Pope’s Call for a New Evangelization

The Pope invites the entire Church to comprise with renewed vigor a new evangelization of the World. To "create a living current of mission and sanctity".

The Rosary Campaign of the Pilgrim MTA wants to reach everyone and to invite them to unite in prayer with Mary before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

In all Churches and chapels, in neighborhoods and countrysides, in all of the corners of the World may Heaven be stormed by the praying of the Rosary in Adoration asking the Holy Spirit to pour His gifts upon the Church so that a new Pentecost for a new Evangelization may come about.

The One Thousand Hail Marys: At the Service of the Church

Responding to the Pope’s call for a new Evangelization, many lay persons who participate in the Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign of the Pilgrim MTA as coordinators by taking the Pilgrim MTA to families want to offer their pastors a service: to take the Schoenstatt Rosary’s Pilgrim MTA to the parish and pray the one thousand Hail Marys in Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament exposed and pray for a new Evangelization of the country, that parish, the diocese, and the World.

If the pastor wishes, the coordinators of the Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign can put up a poster indicating the different hours the faithful can sign up to become a part of this prayerful endeavor---praying the one thousand Hail Marys entirely or in part. Praying the one thousand Hail Marys takes approximately 7 hours.

Rosary means "crown of roses".

Therefore, upon completing the praying of the 1,000 Hail Marys, it is customary to crown the Virgin by placing a rosary on her image. This symbolizes our surrendering to Her our prayers and our desire to live each day the mysteries of the gospel which we have meditated on in the Rosary.
